EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
